Bio

Hello everyone. My name is Danielle Catherine Mesa and I am an aspiring writer and illustrator. I write and draw my own stories through comics and other such forms of sequential art as well as through individual images. I previously presented with the Boston Comics Roundtable at local comic conventions such as Boston Comic Con and MICE 2015.
I am currently working on an updated version of my first graphic novel Pascal and the Timeless Hotel, which is about an aspiring writer who visits an old hotel, assumed to be haunted, but is in fact, enchanted.

Artist Statement
What defines a great character? A great character is one that faces conflict and/or a question and uses them to better themselves. The character goes out of his or her way to explore other alternatives despite whatever is often taken to face value or overlooked by many. The character also takes time to discover new things on his or her own, be it self discovery or understanding others.
What defines a great story? A great story can be an experience or a moment that takes not only its main character on his or her journey through character development or describe them during an involvement in a particular timeframe, but surprises its readers and spectators with new insights. By taking what readers thought they knew or understood about people, places or things through storytelling and standalone images and offering unexpected twists, new insights are introduced to them.
Through the art of illustration, storytelling and character, my goal is to encourage readers of sequential art and viewers of an individual image to take what they are accustomed to seeing and look beyond their expectations. If for example, they look at an old building and expect it to be haunted, suspend that belief. Instead look with fresh new lenses, find signs of what it was during its heyday and watch how it shapes the character. With that being said, how does the reading experience reshape their thinking, what new insights will come to mind? When examining our current hyperconnected society and reevaluation our nostalgia for simpler times, can a standalone image easily persuade a viewer to seek simplicity even in modern times? What are they reconsidering about everyday life in the 21st century when they see a depiction of something as basic as somebody who is looking away from them and invested in the moment they are in? When there is nobody present in the image, how do the depicted objects, rooms or locations alone speak for themselves? For example, a major department store going out of business, packed shelves at a physical retail or even a close up of a newly refurbished table? As ordinary as they are, how does such imagery communicate to the viewer? Does it spark a newfound appreciation for the places they visit or things they take for granted?
